INFORMED CONSENT
In response to the “Still contagious” Letter to the Editor on July 8, your editor replied “Bottom line? Get the vaccine.” Sadly, we are now at a point in socialized medicine where ‘informed consent’ apparently comes from the media not your own doctor! Almost 60 years ago during Tommy Douglas’s campaign for ‘free’ universal health care, my father warned me of the dangers of turning medicine over to a government, any government. I doubt if even he would have anticipated where we are today. We now get our ‘informed consent’ from everyone except our own doctors, who have been threatened with punishment or loss of licence by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario if they dare use their own skills as they see fit. That leaves Ontarians two choices: Put blind faith in governments whose only proven success is incompetence or listen to the medical experts on the Sun’s editorial board. Want to get rid of vaccine hesitancy, especially to an unproven and untested drug? Quit lying to the people! There are exceptionally qualified experts who disagree, through the censorship imposed, when it comes to safety and efficacy of the untested vaccines. Sorry, Doug and editors, when you give us back our doctors, all doctors, then and only then will I be able to give ‘informed consent.’ We need a Royal Commission on why the Ministry of Health had no plan in place for a pandemic which resulted in unnecessary suffering and death and an ineffective hit and miss response.

(But you do have informed consent. It’s your choice whether or not you get the vaccination but if you choose not to, that will come with consequences. Our position is very clear the vaccinations are working to keep our numbers down and people out of hospitals)

TRIGGER FINGER
Re “Dispassionate criminals” (Letters to the Editor, July 8): The writer really hit the mark. Our current Canadian Charter is severely pathetic when victims are impacted by criminals and their inherent useless vocations. Firstly, society is blamed for their lot in life. Secondly, society pays for their time and processing in the courts. Sadly, even victims pay this as well just like all decent citizens. Our Charter needs to stop blaming the bullets (vehicle) and start acknowledging and rightfully condemning not just the fingers but the bodies attached to the owners who are habitually pulling the triggers. Since when did society owe these thugs a living? “He’s a good boy,” Yeah right!
M. Thomas
(It isn’t conceivable that those who have turned to crime in their life are victims, but blaming society when it presents equal opportunity to succeed does nothing. We also need fundamental change in our criminal justice system)

HISTORY LESSON
With all due respect to those of you who feel you can change history and are compelled to deface or destroy historical statues, change the names of educational institutions or decades-old municipal thoroughfares, here is a wake-up call. History is not there for you to like or dislike, it is there for you to learn from it. And if it offends you, even better, because then you are less likely to repeat it. History is not yours to erase or destroy. Teach that to your children.
Gary Megaffin

(There is a very small minority that makes noise and are demanding these changes regardless of how misguided or fruitless they are)
