Record turnover figures for Bolton family cables firm

A FAMILY firm is celebrating a record year - notching up a turnover of £5m despite the pandemic.

Bosses at cable specialists Assembly Solutions (ASL) have seen a 20 per cent year-on-year growth over the period.

And they have ambitions to outstrip that landmark by the time they report fresh figures for next April.

Their output has seen the Nile Street outfit support the NHS, with the manufacture of cables for ventilator apparatus, Covid testing systems and the electronics for hospital beds.

The achievement has been a boost for owners Gareth Balshaw, Sophie Balshaw and Oliver Balshaw, who the venture was passed down to them by dad Graham in early 2020.

Gareth Balshaw, managing director, said: “To achieve what we have in the last 12 months is absolutely incredible, and I’m exceptionally proud to see the company reach this record.

“We have always seen growth year on year, but to expand by 20 per cent during a period of much uncertainty, is testament to our fantastic team and their performance.

“It’s been a pleasant surprise to see an increase in opportunity for UK manufacturing and an exciting time for ASL, investing in new people and machinery to meet customer demand.

“We now have a very exciting and ambitious year ahead as we push for even further growth and aim to reach £6m turnover by April 2022.”

The cable assembly business started out life in a back bedroom just over 25 years ago.

Graham Balshaw was aged 35 when he kickstarted the firm, now based in Terence House.

He told The Bolton News earlier this year he “never dreamt” when he launched the enterprise that one day his children would follow in his footsteps and he was proud of their accomplishments.

“With all their knowledge, ambition and passion, I can already see they’re going to take ASL further than I could have ever imagined, and I will be the proudest father watching them,” he added.

Graham also said he intended to stay on with the company as chairman for the next few years as part of the transition.
